Leading UK chilled food manufacturer Uniq hosted an Energy Away Day recently for colleagues from all four of its manufacturing units across the country.

The event tackled issues such as energy pricing, energy risk strategy, Uniq’s CSR commitment and energy efficiency with highlights including understanding the energy procurement strategy for the company, going through it’s CSR plan, getting the latest news from ELN and looking at energy project successes.

Key successes were the use of variable speed drives retrofitted to air compressors, reducing energy consumption by 25%; free cooling – the use of cold outside air for refrigeration; and the use of dashboards from it’s EMS to engage staff to reduce energy use.

Adele Mills, Uniq’s coordinator for the event, said “We have a CSR vision which incorporates significant targets for energy reduction and the better use of energy. The priority of today is communication – people understanding our CSR vision and where energy sits within it; how we can be more efficient and the successes we have already had around efficiency; and finally, making everyone understand the risk around energy for our organisation. It’s been a fantastic day, the cross functional group has learnt lessons and we have generated new ideas around energy, its use and more so, the reduction of its use.”
