The Chairman of MPI Offshore has said that the environmental risks involved in offshore wind projects were much bigger than those faced by workers on oil rigs and tax breaks might encourage workers to a sector that where they’ll be much needed.

Speaking at the Offshore Wind Conference in London yesterday, Paul Gibson said Whitehall should better support training in the industry and also make tax benefits available.

He said: “The Government complain that giving tax benefits to offshore personnel, they’ll open up tax benefits for oil and gas workers, but what cost will it take to encourage an industry that is required to ensure clean industry?”

Mr Gibson has said that developers and utilities need to give stronger commitments toward the infrastructure of offshore wind because the UK can’t rely on the Government.
