Police officers have arrested five men from London after they conducted a stop check on a vehicle close to the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

Officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) and the Cumbria Constabulary made the arrests at 4.32pm on Monday 2 May, it was confirmed yesterday.

The suspects, all aged in their 20s, were taken under section 41 of the Terrorism Act.

They were taken to police custody in Carlisle overnight and then transported to Manchester. The investigation is being led by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

CNC was unable to comment on the possibility of a specific risk to the site, but their spokesperson told ELN: “No matter what unit we police, we review the site security on a constant basis. Anything local, national or even international that happens, we’ll always be reviewing it.

“We encountered the individuals, and on speaking to them weren’t satisfied with their response, and so asked the local police to come to the scene. Cumbria police are taking them in for further questioning.”
