The Confederation of British Industry has warned that the without global agreement the 2020 carbon targets are premature.

Yesterday the WWF released a report that showed support from 73 European corporations backing legislation for drastic carbon cuts.

Rhian Kelly, CBI Director of Business Environment, said: “The CBI is committed to meeting the UK’s ambitious carbon reduction targets of 80% by 2050.”

However Ms Kelly suggested businesses kept their heads: “It is right to be ambitious about cutting carbon, but in the absence of a global deal, a unilateral move to raise the 2020 EU target would be premature at this stage. What we need now is to establish a carbon price for the 2020s as part of EU Emissions Trading Scheme.”
