The government’s energy policies could add 43% to the average electricity price paid by small to medium sized businesses in 2020.

Energy Minister Charles Hendry was forced to concede the figure in a written statement at the request of Shadow Energy Minister Huw Irranca Davies.

DECC predicted that SMEs will be lumped with nearly a quarter increase on their gas prices (24%).

Mr Hendry added that under a higher gas price scenario, the impact of the same policies on bills is estimated to be lower.

The Minister said that this cost had been calculated alongside the Annual Energy Statement (AES) in July 2010.
