An Exxon pipeline has spilled crude oil into the Yellowstone River in Montana.

An estimated 750 to 1,000 barrels of oil were released into the river in the western United States.

Oil has been found as far as five miles down the river from the pipeline location and other reports of oil sightings are being investigated.

Gary Pruessing,ExxonMobil Pipeline Company President said: “We recognize the seriousness of this incident and are working hard to address it. We will continue to add resources and are extremely grateful for the patience and assistance of local residents and authorities.”

Exxon has yet to determine the cause of the spill, which took place on Saturday. A number of residents in a nearby town were evacuated from their homes early Saturday but were able to return later that morning.
