Prime Minister David Cameron has written a letter to Australian premier Julia Gillard praising her efforts for introducing a carbon tax. The news comes as Australia’s neighbour, New Zealand, announced successful results of its Emission Trading Scheme.

Mr Cameron wrote in the letter: “Securing international progress on climate change depends on making changes at home. Here in Britain the Government is implementing a full programme of measures to cut carbon emissions and create green jobs and green technologies. We support efforts by other countries to do the same.”

Gilllard’s tax proposals followed months of negotiations between the Gillard’s government and Green and independent MPs.

According to the New Zealand government, a report on their Emissions Trading Scheme shows it is working well, emissions are being reduced and it is driving new investment in forestry and renewable electricity.
