British business can lead the world in cleaner energy if it gets backing from politicians and a fair press says former CBI Chief Lord Digby Jones. Speaking to a packed hall at the Energy Event in his hometown of Birmingham the ex-trade envoy made an impassioned plea to let the UK take the competitive lead in clean energy.
“We need people to understand energy in a balanced way we have an opportunity we can take our innovation to help those around the world to get their clean energy solutions”, he said.
Lord Jones outlined a grim future where increased legislation and carbon taxation for the UK would achieve nothing in the global scale unless the giant economies of the world stopped polluting.
“There are 750 million people in India still working the land, you wait till they industrialise. Anything we do or Germany or Europe does is diddly squat compared to India, China and the US. America and China together produce half the world’s pollution. They don’t want a lecture Britain must come to the table with clean hands and say we’re sorry and we are here to help.”
He said there was an opportunity in tidal and wind energy but not in terms of deployment but in terms of research and then selling that solution around the globe but that could only happen if government and the press backed business.
Lord Jones concluded: “We must turn all this into an advantage to create wealth. Business reflects society and we must be socially inclusive and train our people better. We can build a better Britain we have the energy to do so.”
