The owner of the Macondo rig which exploded in the Deepwater Horizon incident has hit back at slurs against its crew members.

Transocean spoke out in response to this week’s final report from the US authorities on the causes of the blowout, which caused 11 fatalities and spilled five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Transocean told ELN: “As the report rightly concludes, the magnitude of the hydrocarbon release made the ignition and explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon unavoidable. We take strong exception to criticisms of the Horizon drill crew, nine of whom perished fighting to save their fellow crew members and the rig, for the actions they took in the face of such an unprecedented emergency.”
