uSwitch’s Director of Consumer Policy has called for much more clarity from energy providers over the issue of confusing bills. Ann Robinson told ELN: “You need at least an A-level in Maths and even then you need some instruction to understand them.”

She said it was time things changed in favour of the bill-payer: “We need transparency on what the companies pay for the energy. Secondly, we need transparency and simplification of tariffs because they’re so confusing. Thirdly, we need transparency in bills, so we can understand them.”

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne impressed Mrs Ann Robinson following his speech at the Liberal Democrat Conference on Tuesday where he vowed to crack down on the Big Six.

She said: “I’m particularly pleased he’s going to give Ofgem more powers. They’re going to be in a very strong position to force through things like simpler tariffs which are good for consumers, but the companies may not necessarily like them.”
