DONG Energy is set to buy Shell’s industrial and commercial gas business in the UK, Shell Gas Direct Limited, for £30 million.

Shell supplies around 2.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas, making it one of the UK’s largest gas sales and marketing companies. In a statement the company said the sale was “to optimise its portfolio, improve profitability and concentrate its global downstream footprint.”

Lars Clausen, DONG Energy Executive Vice President said: “The acquisition of Shell Gas Direct will provide us with a unique opportunity to enter the UK natural gas sales market. The company has a considerable customer portfolio and an experienced sales force that I look forward to welcoming to DONG Energy.”

Shell say the deal won’t affect gas production, nor the company’s remaining businesses in the UK, including Gas Supply, Sales, Marketing and Trading business. The deal is expected to occur in the New Year.
