EDF Energy has applied for planning permission to build a new nuclear plant at Hinkley Point. The French energy firm must now wait for approval from the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC).

Hinkley Point C already has local planning permission. Now the IPC has 28 days to decide whether to accept the submission. The plant will be located on the site in Somerset next to the operating nuclear station Hinkley Point B (pictured) and the decommissioned Point A.

EDF expects that at its peak, the building process will employ more than 5,600 people at the plant near the Severn Estuary.
