The UK’s water and environment body is calling for more quality control on compost. The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) believes that with recycling and landfill increasingly on the agenda there needs to be clearer regulatory footing.

Modern composting facilities can minimise emissions to air and reduce any health impacts from bioaerosols, according to CIWEM, which wants more guidance from UK and EU government.

Nick Reeves, CIWEM’s Executive Director said: “We support the efforts of both Government and the commercial sector to develop and implement quality controls and urge the Government to set increasingly challenging recycling and landfill diversion targets to increase rates of recovery and recycling.”
