American electricity use will shrink down by at least 5 to 15% by 2020 compared to forecast trends, according a survey of 50 energy experts. Economists at the US-founded Brattle Group believe that increased energy efficiency in the States will cause the drop.

The economists surveyed believe electric peak demand is likely to drop by 7.5 to 15% compared to forecasts while natural gas consumption is expected to drop by 5 to 10%.

Ahmad Faruqui, one of the study’s authors said the result “heralds a period of acceleration for energy efficiency.”
