DECC has played down suggestions that it is planning 32,000 wind turbines for the UK. Last week’s Carbon Plan laid out estimates to slash our greenhouse gases to meet our emissions targets. In that plan it set out a range of measures including how much wind energy we might need. The country has to cut emissions by 80% from 1990 levels in 2050. According to newspaper reports over the weekend, one scenario in the Carbon Plan would mean up to 32,000 new turbines, including some 6-10,000 onshore and 25,000 offshore. However a spokesperson for DECC suggested this figure was inflated: “We don’t recognise that specific figure. The Carbon Plan offers a range of scenarios. At most the highest number of turbines in it is 23,000 for onshore and offshore.”
