Severe power outages in Scotland are affecting thousands of homes after gale force winds hit the country this morning.

A spokesperson for SSE reported 50,000 customers were off supply at its latest count because of the “seriously bad” weather, while Scottish Power said it had already had to reconnect 18,000 homes today.

Most of the outages were down to debris from trees hitting power lines in the storm which is expected to calm later tonight.

Both energy firms said their engineers were out in the field working to reconnect their customers as soon as possible, although efforts are being hindered by the weather conditions.
