According to reports, heavyweight automobile manufacturers BMW and General Motors are in talks over a deal that would see the German and US firms working together in advancing fuel cell technology.

Mathias Schmidt, a spokesman for the Munich-based carmaker, told Bloomberg: “We are exploring various topics related to future technologies such as fuel cells.”

Fuel cells generate electricity by way of a chemical reaction that combines hydrogen and oxygen to create water. A German magazine reported this weekend that the deal could materialise as early as January 2012.
