Shell has shut down its 200,000 barrel-a-day oil field off the Nigerian coast after a leak was found during tanker loading.

The oil company apologised and reported that less than 40,000 oil barrels were leaked and the oil flow has been stopped.

Mutiu Sunmonu, Shell’s Nigerian chairman said: “We are sorry this leak has happened. It is important to stress that this was not a well-control incident of any sort and to make clear that no one has been injured.”

Shell has been operating in Africa for more than 70 years and has been criticised for previous spills in the country.
