A technology firm says it is working on an electric car battery with a 500-mile range. IBM claims its lithium air battery will last around five times longer and is lighter than current batteries on the market.

Researchers in Switzerland and the USA are working on the battery, which could hit the road from 2020, according to reports.

The research could be good news for the EV industry, which is struggling to combat so-called ‘range anxiety’, with customers reluctant to buy cars with a limited range compared to traditional petrol models.
