American oil and gas company Chevron is fighting a fire that started on one of its Nigerian rigs yesterday. The exploration well off the coast had 154 workers on it at the time and two are missing.

The company said every effort is being made to find the missing workers. The cause of the incident is still unclear.

Andrew Fawthrop, managing director of Chevron’s Nigeria/Mid-Africa Strategic Business Unit said: “We do not know what caused the incident. We are working diligently to contain the fire, which is restricted to the rig. Substantial resources have been deployed including well control specialists and drilling experts.”
