Do you know your kilowatts from your kilojoules? What adds more to your bills- environmental policies or transmission costs? MPs have launched an inquiry to determine how much we consumers really know about the energy we use.

As the UK’s energy system gets ready for significant evolution over the next few years, consumers will play a big part in how parts of it change. The Energy and Climate Change Committee will conduct investigations into how much people interact with and understand the energy markets in order to ascertain whether more education is necessary.

As the regulator Ofgem begins to enact reforms of the retail market, the committee, led by Tory MP Tim Yeo, will ask if these go far enough to help consumers find a better deal.

The deadline for the submissions of evidence is the March 9.
