A fire has broken out at RWE npower’s 750MW biomass plant in Tilbury, Essex. The fire is ongoing but firefighters have begun to control the blaze, a spokesperson for npower said.

The company does not know the cause of the fire but it is believed to have started in a storage area. The damage of the fire is currently unknown. All staff were evacuated without injury.

In 2011 the Tilbury power station was converted from a coal-fired power station to run on 100% biomass fuel, using renewable wood pellets.
