DECC today gave permission for a new dedicated biomass plant in Bristol. Energy firm E.ON won approval for its 150MW power station at Royal Portbury Dock in the Port of Bristol, which could make enough electricity to power up to 160,000 homes.

The plant will be fuelled mainly by imported virgin wood, dedicated energy crops and locally sourced waste wood.

The UK has a binding target under the European Commission’s Renewable Energy Directive to source 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

The news comes just four days after E.ON announced it is closing its coal plant in Kent next March to fall in line with EU laws.
