Google is “excited” about its ‘green’ plans for a new data centre in Taiwan. The search engine behemoth has announced it will be using thermal energy storage at the centre.

It said in a statement: “We are really excited about the facility itself, where our long-term investment will exceed $300 million. This data centre will be the first in our fleet to save energy through a night-time cooling and thermal energy storage system.”

The US firm claimed it “will be one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly” data centres in the region. Thermal energy storage keeps heat energy in “reservoirs” so that it can be reused at a later time.

The new Taiwanese building is set to come online by the second half of 2013.
