The Government today invested £60 million in the Met Office Hadley Centre’s Climate Programme to support “mitigation and adaptation actions”.

The funding is aimed at improving collaborations between the Met Office and UK academic institutions, as well as to help Government, business, local authorities and other organisations understand the threats and opportunities of climate change.

Nearly £50 million is being committed to a programme of research and modelling until 2015. Another £11m will go towards High Performance Computing after the recommendation of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser.

David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science said: “Supercomputing is fundamental to modern research, especially as it becomes more complex and produces an increasing amount of data. This investment will keep the UK at the forefront of climate science and modelling, underpinned by the leading knowledge and expertise of the Met Office.”

The Met Office recently claimed the world has warmed by around 0.75C since 1900.
