A Chinese manufacturing company is set to launch a 5.5MW offshore wind turbine with the hope of selling it to the overseas market in the future.

Dongfang Electric will install the turbine in a wind farm in Nantong in east China’s Jiangsu province for testing later this year, according to reports.

The company hopes to raise its share of the Chinese market share to 15% by 2015.

Reports claim Dongfang is currently the third largest wind turbine maker in China in terms of capacity with 11.1% of the market and 6,898MW installed.

Industry officials have estimated China will demand around 1,000 5MW and larger turbines in the next decade at an average of 100 turbines per year.
