Campaigners around the world joined protests against using shale gas over the weekend in what was dubbed a ‘Global Frackdown’.

The anti-fracking action took place at the Lib Dem conference in the UK, Brussels in Belgium, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in France’s capital city Paris, as well as Romania, Canada, the Czech Republic and California, USA.

More than 150 consumer, environmental and public health organisations including CREDO Action, Environment America, Democracy for America, Friends of the Earth and 350.org were expected to take part.

Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch which organised the day of action said: “While big oil and gas continues its spin campaign to obscure the dangers of this toxic, polluting process, people around the world are taking a stand through the Global Frackdown.”

The environmental risks of fracking or hydraulic fracturing are the source of huge debate with opponents worried it can contaminate drinking water but supporters convinced it is safe with the right building measures.
