Householders are being urged to stock up on heating oil now in a new campaign backed by the Government.

Initiated by industry and consumer groups, the ‘Buy Oil Early’ campaign is advising people who use heating oil to shop around for the best deal. DECC is also encouraging householders to buy oil as soon as possible when demand is low to guarantee fuel for the winter.

DECC says many households in rural areas found it difficult to get oil supplies in the cold months in 2010 as distributors were flooded with orders and deliveries were disrupted due to the snow.

New Energy Minister John Hayes said: “I welcome the campaign by consumer groups and industry to encourage heating oil consumers to stock up early this winter. Previous severe winters show that it is better to stock up before the cold weather sets in, when suppliers have spare delivery capacity. Ordering oil later risks longer delivery times, especially if cold weather increases demand and disrupts deliveries. I would also encourage all consumers to save money on heating their homes by ensuring their homes are fully insulated.”

The campaign is run by Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), Citizens Advice Bureau, Consumer Focus and the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS).
