The ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers are urging consumers to speak to them on how to save money by insulating homes and checking they are on the best deal.

British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, SSE and Scottish Power will be speaking to their customers across the country during the ‘Big Energy Saving Week’. Run by Citizens Advice in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, the Government and consumer groups, the national campaign week provides practical advice on managing energy bills.

It claims gas and electricity firms will be spending around £275 million this year to help the elderly and people on certain benefits. This includes free or subsidised wall and loft insulation and access to trust funds.

The news comes after the recent rise in prices for gas and electricity consumers this winter.

Angela Knight CBE, Chief Executive at Energy UK, trade body for the gas and electricity sector said: “Energy companies recognise that the cost of gas and electricity, as well as a whole range of other household bills, is a real concern for many people in these difficult financial times… So as winter approaches, anyone who is worried about paying their fuel bills should call their energy supplier in the first instance or call the free and independent Home Heat Helpline.”

The Big Energy Saving Week runs from 22 – 27 October.
