Google is investing around $75 million (£47.3 million) in a wind farm in the US.

The deal is expected to give the search engine giant a stake in the Rippey Wind Farm in Greene County in mid-west America. It already has 20 wind turbines with a capacity to produce 50MW of electricity, enough to power around 15,000 homes.

The investment is part of the company’s aim to encourage the development of renewable energy sources and use clean power for its data centres. Google aims to have a third of the power for its data centres from renewable sources, according to reports.

The company’s renewable energy investments now exceeds $990 million.
