Lighting company Philips has created a new LED light (pictured) it claims is the “world’s most energy efficient”.

It claims the tube lighting prototype is twice as efficient as those currently used in general lighting applications and will drive huge energy and cost savings.

The new TLED light produces 200 lumens per watt (lm/W) compared to 100lm/W for fluorescent lighting and 15lm/W for traditional light bulbs. Philips claims it is the “first time” lighting engineers have been able to reach 200lm/W efficiency without compromising the quality of light.

Rene van Schooten, CEO Light Sources & Electronics for Philips Lighting said: “This again is a major breakthrough in LED lighting and will further drive the transformation of the lighting industry. After being recognised for our quality of LED light (mimicking traditional light bulbs) to creating new experience… we now present the next innovative step in doubling lighting efficiency. It’s exciting to imagine the massive energy and cost savings it will bring to our planet and customers.”

Lighting is believed to account for more than 19% of the world’s total electricity consumption. The new lamps are intended to replace fluorescent tube lighting used in office and industry, which currently account for more than half of the world’s total lighting.

Philips expects the light to go on the market in 2015, initially to replace office lighting before being used in homes.
