Carmaker Ford has called on software developers to create an app which helps drivers be more fuel efficient. The US car manufacturer is offering thousands of dollars for a smartphone and tablet app which fits the bill.
One of the only requirements is for the app to use the open source technology called OpenXC data and incorporate “on-road personalised experiences [so] customers can share, compare and learn how to optimise their fuel usage”.
The developer which wins the grand prize for best overall app will get $25,000 (£16,000). The runner up wins $15,000 and the third-place prize will be $5000.
If developers create an app which deserves an honourable mention, they’ll get $3000 while $1000 is up for grabs with an app which is deemed to be a “popular choice”. Ford will also shell out $100 each to the top 10 ideas entered into the competition.
