British retailer Matalan has cut its energy usage by 18% by managing its consumption using a wireless technology.

It installed the Building Energy Management System that controls and monitors a building’s lighting, heating and cooling in 155 stores, which helped the firm save more than £760,000 in its energy bills.

Matalan plans to roll-out the technology, designed by Wireless Energy Management Systems (WEMS), in 206 out of 216 stores, with savings projected to be more than £1.7 million in total.

David Derbyshire, Environmental Manager at Matalan Retail Plc said: “We’re committed to reducing our energy consumption across our entire estate. Matalan has made the commitment to install WEMSystem in all our retail outlets. The installed stores have shown a considerable reduction in energy consumption… and this is reflected in our energy bill which has decreased dramatically since implementation. We’re continuing to work with WEMS to optimise our estate and drive further savings.”

The energy management firm has also helped telecoms company BT save money on energy bills.
