Energy supplier npower has appointed a new director specifically focused on helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) deal with and cut their energy use.

Jason Scagell comes to the newly created post with more than 20 years’ experience in the energy sector. He has worked in retail markets, trading and generating and most recently Mr Scagell helped to transform Bord Gais from a gas transmission company to a major dual fuel energy supplier.

In his new role, Jason will be responsible for the team at npower to help its SME customers understand and reduce their energy use. The new Director of npower SME said he will be doing “everything I can to champion small businesses”.

Mr Scagell said: “We know that the prime focus for most small firms is, quite rightly, running their business. As such, they often don’t have the time or resources to dedicate to reducing their energy use. At npower, we are helping SMEs understand how they use energy by making them aware of the simple steps they can take to have a real impact on their bottom line.”

This could be as simple as showing business owners how much they can save with energy efficient lighting or keeping refrigerators clear of obstruction, he added, or picking the right fixed energy tariff.
