The South African subsidiary of Vodafone has achieved energy savings of around R6.5 million (£0.43m) through its renewable project, according to reports.

Vodacom installed a PV system at its Cape Town offices earlier this year, which provides around 75% of the buildings peak power requirements.

It is part of the company’s efforts in trying to reduce the amount of energy it consumes and work towards achieving its goal of cutting carbon emissions by 50% by 2020. It has also set a carbon reduction target of 5% per base station per year.

In its latest annual report, the mobile communications company said it is exploring more efficient technologies and finding ways to minimise its environmental footprint.

Reports suggest it is rolling out a power management system, expected to save the group between R2.2 million (£0.15m) to R3.5 million (£0.23m) every year and when fully implemented, save carbon emissions equivalent to taking 1,800 cars off the road.
