An American electric car battery firm has issued a warned over its future by stating it may need to file for bankruptcy.

Originally funded by the US Department of Energy, Ecotality has three businesses – Blink, Minit-Charger and ETEC LABS – and Blink in particular looked to have spread its reach fairly widely, with more than 23,000 car chargers installed at stores and homes around the States.

However the firm said this week it was unable to earn enough revenue to support its operations, Reuters reported.

Ecotality published a message attempting to reassure customers on its website which stated: “We wanted you to know that the needs of our drivers are paramount to us and despite the challenges we currently face, we will continue to operate the Blink Network and maintain our Blink chargers until further notice.”

The message implored: “We urge you to visit a Blink charger today and show that you support the growth of a public charging infrastructure.”

Two months ago US electric car firm Miles Electric Vehicles was forced to file for bankruptcy and Ecotality clearly fears it may have to go the same way.
