What are TRIADS?

Next year many consumers will receive a TRIAD or Transmission Network use of system (TNUoS) charge based on the demand they use through this coming winter.

TNUoS charges are levied by the National Grid for the maintenance of the electricity transmission system. The TRIAD season runs between the 1st November and 29th February and the three TRIAD dates (including the highest half hour period of UK system peak demand) are published each April.

How can TRIAD dates affect your energy bill?

Consumers with itemised supply invoices will incur a charge based on their demand during the TRIAD dates, which is passed through by suppliers on behalf of National Grid.

As the £/kW charge continues to increase these charges can come as a shock, there has already been an average increase of 60% against the 2009 rates.

Will this affect you?

All Half-Hourly Electricity supply points with itemised invoicing will receive a charge based on demand during the TRIAD dates.

How can you prepare?

Managing demand on the TRIAD dates can deliver savings, for example in some areas even a 30kW reduction in demand can result in a four figure cost saving!

Schneider Electric Professional Services encourages its clients to understand their TRIAD cost exposure and consider the capital they are allocating to this rising electricity component.

The central service includes warnings throughout the TRIAD season. All warning notifications are issued before 10am and will include a traffic light warning system of the peak demands that day along with commentary on the primary drivers.

Once a customer has reacted to a TRIAD warning they should monitor and observe the result. Schneider Electric has a number of reporting packages to help consumers monitor performance, measure response and manage their exposure throughout the TRIAD season.
