A common criticism of solar panels is that they’re ugly – but not so with the latest incarnation of a solar panel designed to imitate normal roof slates.

Launched at the Grand Designs Live event in Birmingham earlier this week the new Solar Slate Multi is a single solar panel that looks like multiple slates.

Makers say installing the new panel costs 50% less than its predecessor. With a peak power of almost 1kW, the system will generate roughly a quarter of a typical household’s annual energy needs and save almost half a tonne (443kg) of carbon emissions, according to the firm.

Eleanor Lynch of Solar Slate Ltd said the product is ideal for using in conservation areas, on historical buildings, new builds and renovation projects.
