The locust and mealworm breeder Livefoods Direct has enlisted the help of an energy supplier to fight a plague of rising energy bills.
Heating its four breeding centres – which supply live insect feed to the exotic reptile trade – means energy bills eat up 20% of the firms running costs.
General manager Steve Evans said: “We consume large amounts of energy in order to keep breeding and rearing conditions to an optimum.
“Rooms are maintained at anything from 20 to 37°C with frozen rodents for birds of prey and snakes being stored at -20°C.”
Orchard Energy said it will help the firm find the best prices on the market and set up a buying strategy that will protect it from fluctuating prices.
