The Football Association is among the first five organisations to win an international standard for waste reduction which launches today in the UK.

The standard – claimed to be the world’s first – also includes a check on whether waste is being managed responsibly.

Five UK businesses achieved the Carbon Trust Waste Standard following a pilot stage for showing they are measuring, managing and reducing their solid and hazardous waste year on year – through increased reuse, recycling or recovery.

Alongside the FA in the waste line-up were the engineering firm Renishaw, Costa-coffee owner Whitbread, accountancy firm PwC and AkzoNobel Decorative Paints. The latter four have also achieved the other two Carbon Trust standards for carbon and water reduction.

Tom Delay, Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust wants more businesses to take urgent action to become more sustainable.

He said: “Organisations that fail to bring sustainability inside their operations will face the consequences of increasingly scarce or expensive commodities, water and energy.

“Reducing waste and resource use, along with carbon emissions and water, is a crucial part of the transformation that all businesses will need to make in the next decade. By taking early action and opening themselves up to independent certification showing real reductions, the businesses that hold our Standards are showing themselves to be genuine leaders and are putting themselves in a much stronger competitive position.”

The UK waste sector is responsible for 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year – around 3% of all UK emissions.
