Companies are failing to integrate sustainability into their core business functions according to a new international survey by non-profit group BSR.
Asked what were the most important leadership challenges for sustainability, 62% of the 700 sustainability executives polled said integration was an issue. Convincing investors of the value of sustainability measures came second with 28%.
Almost a quarter (24%) said there was “little integration” at their firm. Changing the mentality of leaders was identified as the biggest barrier to improvement, with 13% of respondents saying it was a problem. Another common barrier was budget limitations.
Nearly a quarter of those surveyed (23%) said returns on investments in sustainability were judged on the basis of energy use – making it by far the most widely used measure. The impact on brand and reputation came second with 9%.
