The iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign which greets millions of visitors as they head into the city will go green this winter.

Three “solar trees” will be installed nearby which will allow the sign’s backlighting and 89-bulb border to be powered solely by the renewable source.

The project is part of Southern Nevada’s – which includes the Las Vegas Valley – clean energy plans and will include an educational display describing the project and information about renewable energy and sustainability.

It is being led by the Clean Energy Project (CEP), a non-profit organisation and Green Chips, a public/private partnership for sustainable initiatives.

Chris Giunchigliani, Green Chips Board Member and Commissioner of Clark County, which approved the project said: “The Las Vegas Valley is one of the sunniest spots on the planet. We are delighted to harness that sunshine and use it to power such an iconic symbol of our community.

“The project will forever tie our storied past with the possibility of an exciting future powered by solar energy.”
