The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) has appointed Dr Simon Festing as its new CEO.

Dr Festing originally trained in medicine and spent the last two years as Chief Executive at the Society for General Microbiology. In the past he has also worked at Friends of the Earth and volunteered for Greenpeace.

Jim Oatridge, Chair of CIWEM’s Trustee Board said: “Simon’s appointment will enhance our capability in delivering our strategic objectives for the benefit of the public, our 10,000 Members working in various sectors globally, key policy makers in governments and financial institutions and the wider sustainable environmental movement.”

Dr Festing will take up his new job at the start of March next year. The position has been vacant since the death of Nick Reeves in September.
