Google is to buy another wind farm in Texas for $75 million (£46m) as it aims to increase its renewable energy capacity.

The 182MW Panhandle II wind project, which will generate enough electricity to power around 56,000 homes, will be located in Carson County and developed by Pattern Energy Group.

It follows the internet search engine giant’s previous investment in the 161MW Spinning Spur wind project in Texas.

Google said in a statement: “These efforts reflect our long-standing commitment to renewable energy as both an investor and a consumer.”

The latest facility is expected to start operating by the end of this year.

Earlier this week Google announced it would buy a “smart” thermostat start-up company in a deal worth $3.2 billion (£1.9bn).
