The University of Portsmouth has built a new energy efficient data centre worth £2.25 million.

Opened at the end of 2013, the centre’s “cutting-edge design” gives the university full control of its data centre cooling plant.

Data centres measure how efficiently they use energy with what is called a power usage effectiveness (or PUE) rating.

Portsmouth’s new centre is projected to hit 1.14. That compares with a recent study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of data centres showing on average they have a PUE rating of 2.18.

Air conditioning firm Airedale which helped design the cooling system said it saves energy because of “indirect” cooling air circulating in the room. It said this will deliver free cooling up to 95% of the year depending on air temperatures.

James Holland, Network & Security Services Manager (Information Services) at the University of Portsmouth said: “This is an excellent facility that the University can rely upon to deliver world class academic support and research development”.
