The nephew of legendary F1 racing driver Ayrton Senna will get behind the wheel of an electric model in the Formula E when it opens in September.

Brazilian-born Bruno Senna who has also competed in Formula 1 joined Mahindra Racing, the only Indian team in Formula E.

His team-mate is Chennai-born Karun Chandhok and the pair previously worked together in 2010 in the Formula 1 team Hispania Racing.

Senna, aged 30, said: “It’s also an exciting prospect to be part of such a revolutionary championship from the beginning.

“There will be a lot to learn very quickly, both for the teams and drivers in terms of technology and driving styles and for race fans as Formula E will popularise a new type of motorsport across the world.”

Chandhok who finished sixth in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 2012 added: “The city races are going to be a great spectacle and the quality of teams and drivers should ensure some fantastic racing.”

The racing series begins in September and takes place entirely on temporary race tracks in 10 cities around the world. The season finale hits London on 27 June 2015.
