Fans of Formula E can expect a fiercely competitive attitude from Virgin Racing, if Team Principal Alex Tai is anything to go by.

He reveals the team is “in it to win it” and is pleased everyone from the drivers (Sam Bird and Jamie Alguersari) to engineers want to be at the top of their game.

Tai says: “We want to get ahead and stay ahead. We have a mantra – I don’t want to keep trotting it out, but ‘fast is first’.

“We want to make sure we have the fastest drivers and every consideration is about going fast.”

He’s clearly convinced by the Formula E car which all ten teams must use in the first year of the series, calling it a “thoroughbred”.

In a pre-season shakedown a week ago the Virgin team had the “fastest lap time in the morning and were the first car off the track which I was delighted with”, adds the Virgin Racing man.

And Tai says it would have been a “disaster” if a British team wasn’t in the race.

With many F1 teams based in the “Oxfordshire triangle” he believes there is a great “pool of talent” for teams like Virgin to draw on.

He also points to the motor racing manufacturers and research and development teams based around Donington, the racing track which is home to Formula E teams.
