Empty plastic bottles don’t sound like the most promising start for a deep sleep – but that’s where thousands upon thousands are headed.

Water brand VITTEL is teaming up with fellow French firm DODO, a bedding manufacturer, to turn them into stuffing for duvets and pillows.

The firm points to statistics that the equivalent of 17 1.5-litre VITTEL bottles containing PET, a plastic, make a 60 x 60cm pillow.

It takes 58 such bottles to make a 220 x 240cm duvet and 5.5 of them to make a travel cushion.

A study by Utrecht University for Wellman International found the pillow makers cut their products’ carbon footprint and energy use by 70% after using the polyester fibers from the bottles.
