Energy company British Gas is claiming millions of Brits could miss out on getting free insulation because they don’t think their houses qualify for the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme.

A September poll of more than  3,000 UK adults found just one in five people believe their home qualifies, despite it being available to 90% of homes that need it.

Renters are also unaware: more than half of people surveyed (51%) didn’t know rented properties are also eligible, according to the poll commissioned by the supplier.

Claire Miles, Managing Director of British Gas New Energy said: “It’s easy to see why people may not realise their home is eligible, as previous schemes mainly helped low income and vulnerable households in order to provide support to those who need it most.”
