Amazon has pledged to get all of its data centres to run entirely on renewable energy, joining Apple, Google and Facebook which have all made similar commitments.

“AWS [Amazon Web Services] has a long-term commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for our global infrastructure footprint”, it said on its website.

AWS is one of the largest cloud providers in the industry, used by internet services including Netflix, Instagram and Spotify.

Earlier this year Greenpeace awarded Amazon an ‘F’ for its energy performance.

David Pomerantz from the environmental group said: “A renewably powered Amazon Web Services could be a catalyst for clean energy growth around the world, a hero in the effort to build the modern economy, powered by 100% renewable energy that is so urgently needed to address climate change.”
